when opportunity knocks....

i took a leave of absence yesterday...
so i got a chance to watch MARUKO-CHAN! on tv.. (hehehe what a way to spend your day!)
on this episode, Maruko was trying hard to master the recorder .... everyone in Maruko's class was eager to pass art class (that requires playing a song with a recorder) ... while looking at all the efforts, suddenly the narator said... " Look how  hard all those children trying to learn to play the recorder,  eventhough they don't know what this knowledge will bring to them years after that," then the narator conclude with this a sentence need poundering... "Their parents also learned how to play the recorder when they're young, now they don't even know where that musical instrument is..... "

mmmm... I used to agree with this statement... not everything is worth learning..
but 2 books made me change all that...

this past few weeks i've been captivated by  books writen by Andrea Hirata...
first i stumble upon Endensor-- his 3rd book... ( i know people tell me that i should've read the 1st book before anything else.. but.. what can i say.. it was an accident...mmm serendipity to be exact...) and fell in love with the way this man thinks, writes and tells a story..... from then on I feel the need to read his first novel "Laskar Pelangi" .... and i did...

Laskar Pelangi tells a story of hope, opportunity and will...that book--especially the character Lintang and Mahar-- opened my eyes on how opportunity and fate works in life...
their story, made me think differently about things....

like in Maruko's case for instance.. yes.. now, i believe people should learn lotsa stuff.. to discover what talent they have (in Laskar Pelangi the character Mahar was given a chance to sing in front of the class and then discovers his talent in music and art) ....

mmmm.. and this way of thinking (surprisingly) effected my opinion in lotsa things... (thx alot Andrea Hirata!) .. when watching the news with my bapak-- we discussed about the comment people made about Indonesian team losing in SEA Games .... Bapak told me that people are angry coz we spent lotsa money to train the athelete but they came up short.... mmmm.... for me, in order to find talent, we need some sacrifices.....if money needed to be thrown away, then be it... coz i think people should be given lotsa opportunity so they can shine.... this country lacks of opportunity, (shown on Laskar Pelangi novel).. maybe we should start thinking differently.... let opportunity knocks lotsa time in the doors of Indonesian people.. coz maybe, then we'll see lotsa things to smile about here in Indonesia.... don't think about the money... talents are more important.. let the people find their ownself... hell.. with money, that small useless things that only can create problems!!!!
